Artist Statement - Phyllis Uitti-Maslin
My collage images reflect my artistic goal to continually challenge myself as well as my chosen medium. I fracture, slice and reconfigure my photographs to engage the viewer. If it is difficult to understand the image, it encourages the viewer to examine the parts more closely and therefore be drawn into finding meaning. My hope is that every time an image is revisited, each person will discover something before unseen. I stitch some of the photographs together as a way of blending my ancestral quilting tradition with the technology of photography, thereby contrasting the softness of sewing with the starkness of the black and white photographic process.
